Gender mainstreaming for Namibian journalism educators
UNESCO and Gender Links will conduct a one-day workshop on 27 October 2011 to introduce a course on gender mainstreaming in journalism and media education, and gather insights and inputs from lecturers in journalism and media education at the University of Namibia (UNAM) and the Polytechnic of Namibia (PON).
The development of this course emanates from the findings and recommendations of the 2011 Audit of Gender in Journalism and Media Education in Southern Africa. The study focused on the gender structure of departments of media education and journalism in tertiary institutions, and of the journalism courses offered. The findings of the study highlighted that the attention given to the subjects depended on the lecturer and that gender was not considered in a systematic way.
The course on Gender Mainstreaming in Journalism and Media Education Course Content, Teaching and Assessments is a direct response to journalism and media educators on how to mainstream gender in their work. The workshop will introduce the course to journalism and media education lectures from UNAM and PON, and will collect feedback and input from the participants regarding the content, methodology and time-frame of the course.
It is expected that the course will be improved and strengthened before being offered to media education and journalism lecturers from Southern African institutions in order for them to incorporate gender into their course content, teaching and assessment. This process will lead to a systematic incorporation of gender into media education and journalism training curriculum at several institutions across the region by 2015. The course will also be incorporated into the curriculum of Gender Links Training Institute.
UNESCO works towards protecting the rights of women and girls through enhancing gender sensitization and awareness on key gender inequalities. The media can be a powerful catalyst for the empowerment of women, realizing Millennium Development Goal 3, and is an important component of the MDG-F Project “Setting things right towards gender equality and equity”.
