Giving youth a chance in electrical and electronics trade
The final brief report of a recent workshop in Accra, Ghana, to develop curricular and teaching resources for the Electrical and Electronics Trades is now available.
The report describes how participants developed country-specific curricula in these two trades including subjects like basic electricity; cable jointing; domestic installation; winding electrical machines; electrical & electronics drawings; electronics; radio & television electronics; computer applications, satellite radio and television; and entrepreneurship.
Learning from other countries
Participants came from three English-speaking countries in West-Africa, namely Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria.
They discussed the Electrical and Electronics curriculum of the successful UNESCO-Nigeria Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme.
Participants were also exposed to other TVET curricular models from Bahrain, Libya and other parts of the world.
The participants from The Gambia and Sierra Leone had travel difficulties and did not attend, but they are and will still be involved in the process called ‘Kaduna Consensus’ for the sharing of curricula and learning materials
UNESCO considers the area of electrical and electronics trade as a huge potential for young people.
The workshop took place from 26-30 September 2011 in Tema, Ghana and was co-organized by UNESCO Dakar and the Ghana's Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
It is part of UNESCO and its partners action to revitalise TVET provision for youth employment, human capital creation and sustainable development in the West-African sub-region.
