International Donors’ Conference Towards a New Future for Haiti
At United Nations headquarters Wednesday, the international community pledged almost 10$ billion for Haiti.
“This is a remarkable result and President Preval’s powerful call for the focus to be on education now opens the route to building back better”, commented Director-General Irina Bokova, who attended the donor conference, “UNESCO is totally committed to this focus on education and will do its utmost to work with Haiti to make this a reality”.
Haitian President Rene Preval, saying now was the time to ‘dream of a new Haiti’, told representatives of more than 130 nations and non-governmental organizations that he wanted education to be the focus of the international community's effort to rebuild the country. “By appealing for an international response to the challenge that can be a model for future disasters, the Haitian president understands that putting the focus on education means putting the focus on new opportunities”, noted Ms Bokova.
