Iran: Expert Meeting on the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention
A meeting to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention was held in Tehran, Iran on 4 February 2013. This half-day event was a joint effort of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and ICOMOS-Iran.
Participants included researchers, scholars and experts in the area of world heritage from governmental and non-governmental sectors. Dr Mohammad Reza Saeidabadi, Secretary General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO opened the meeting. In addition, Dr Mehdi Hojat, Head of Iran ICOMOS, also made a presentation.
The meeting was organized by themes on the role of national ICOMOS in the preparation of nomination files; the concept of 'outstanding global value' in the context of world heritage; and lastly, natural disasters and their impacts on world heritage.
As outcomes of the meeting, Dr AM Mostakin, the Head of the Culture Department of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and Secretary of the meeting, emphasized the need for a more scientific and coordinated cooperation between the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organisation, advisory bodies such as ICOMOS, ICOM and IUCN and the 15 world heritage sites of Iran.
