Irina Bokova opens the first meeting of the International Coordination Committee for the protection of Haitian cultural heritage

On Wednesday, 7 July 2010, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova opened the first meeting of the International Coordination Committee (ICC) for the protection of Haitian cultural heritage at UNESCO Headquarters.

The Committee’s objective is to provide support to Haitian authorities in restoring the country’s cultural heritage.  It was created by UNESCO at an international meeting organized at Headquarters on 16 February 2010 when eminent experts in the field of culture, and representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as UNESCO Member States, gathered to review the situation of heritage sites and cultural life in Haiti following the devastating earthquake of 12 January.

In her opening address, the Director-General highlighted UNESCO’s actions in Haiti during the past four months and noted some of the Organization’s major achievements in this regard.  She reiterated her personal engagement, and that of UNESCO, to continue supporting Haiti in restoring its cultural heritage and re-launching its creative sector.
