“The European City of Culture” project was launched in 1985 by the European Union Member States on the initiative of Ms Melina Mercouri, former Minister of Culture of Greece (1981-1989). It aims to highlight the richness and diversity of European cultures, as well as to promote greater mutual knowledge and understanding among Europe’s citizens. The initiative is in keeping with the spirit of the UN International Year for the Rapprochement of cultures.
