Irina Bokova takes part in the 14th Summit of La Francophonie in Kinshasa
On 13 October, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova represented the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the XIVth Summit of La Francophonie. The Summit, held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, is devoted to the theme “Francophonie, environmental and economic challenges in the face of global governance”. This is first time the Summit is held in Central Africa.
Referring to the Sahel, where 20 million people are affected by a food crisis, where climate change and the consequences of drought are combined with political turmoil and fuel the spiral of violence, the Director-General calls for more integrated policies and stronger partnerships to strengthen regional action. The Director-General underlined the importance of the protection of human dignity as a vital path to reach pacific solutions for all conflicts and for the sustainable development of all societies.
The Summit is held every two years and brings together Heads of state and Government officials of the countries that have French as an official language. The aim of the Summit is to promote the values of La Francophonie, the solidarity of French-speaking countries and closer cooperation among them.
