Just published: The Role of Municipalities in Advancing Women’s Equity in Canada

The Canadian Commission just published “The Role of Municipalities in Advancing Women’s Equity in Canada” authored by Dr Meghan Brooks, Chair of the Advisory Committee of the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD).

Developed in collaboration with UNESCO’s International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities – ICCAR, the document presents how municipal governments are not only well placed to apply a gender lens to city planning and decision-making, but have an imperative to do so in order to adequately serve residents. By bringing women to the table, delivering gender-specific programming through an intersectional lens, gender mainstreaming governance and using data to inform decision-making and track progress, municipalities can enhance the inclusiveness of their communities and institutions.

The document presents an overview of key issues facing women, information about UNESCO and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO’s efforts for change, examples from the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD), member of UNESCO’s International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities – ICCAR, concrete opportunities for Municipal Government to develop in order to take action, as well as some ideas to move forward.
