Lithuania Prepares World Information Technology Forum
The Government of the Republic of Lithuania in co-operation with the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), UNESCO and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will be the host of the "World Information Technology Forum" (WITFOR) which will take place in Lithuania's capital Vilnius from 27 to 29 August 2003.
With the forum in August in Vilnius, which is also planed to be a preparatory conference aiming at contributing to the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS), its organizers plan to launch a series of conferences to be held every second year.
The conference's main topic is "ICT-equity"." Nobody else but ourselves who are seeking to modernise our countries and guarantee well-being and peace to our citizens can place the resolution of the ICT-equity problem on the global level" says Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas in his welcoming statement on the website of the conference.
"We are looking forward to debate with WITFOR participants UNESCO's four principles for creating equitable knowledge societies, namely Universal access to information, equal access to education, freedom of expression, cultural and linguistic diversity" says Abdul Waheed Khan, UNESCO's Assistant Director General for Communication and Information, who will lead UNESCO's delegation to WITFOR.
The Conference participants are expected to adopt the" Vilnius Declaration " a document aiming at advising governments on how to formulate and follow the best strategy for the use of ICT in order to achieve global ICT equity.
