Local Engineering Association Established in Ermera, Timor-Leste


A mini congress to establish Ermera Municipality Engineering Association took place on 27 January 2018, in Ermera Municipality, Timor-Leste. It was the first time for the country to establish an engineering association in the local level.

UNESCO, through the Malaysia-UNESCO Cooperation Programme, has been working together with a number of engineering institutions to assess and review the existing engineering curricula offered in Timor-Leste. In this light, National Engineering Association of Timor-Leste (ANETL) has been working toward the accreditation, qualification and engineering standardization.

With the support of ANETL, on Saturday, 27 January 2018, a mini congress was held to newly establish Ermera Municipality Engineering Association, where this place also known for its Timorese coffee. Subsequent to the national association established earlier, this was the first time for Timor-Leste to establish an engineering association in the local level.

The mini congress was opened with the remarks from ANETL, UNESCO, and Ermera Municipality respectively. Around 100 participants, mostly engineers from governments to private companies, discussed and agreed on the statutes and the membership. Many  participants referred to gender equality in its membership, as one of the priority area of UNESCO. The established association is expected to contribute to the improvement of the quality of engineering in Timor-Leste in a local level, which will contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
