Media as a partner to establish and reach gender equality indicators in Albania
An interview with Fiorela Shalsi, National Programme Coordinator, Women & Elections at UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, in its Albania Country Office. The UN has considered media as a main partner to facilitate a public demand for gender equality, human rights and access to justice including the compliance with international legal instruments and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
Before being able to facilitate the public demand, media professionals need to have an in-depth understanding of gender equality, fair, factual and balanced reporting and a set of indicators to measure progress towards this goal as per international standards.
In order to increase media professionals’ knowledge on gender equality and better understand the role that media can play in supporting progress towards equality, UN Women and UNESCO supported the preliminary training of a group of 7 Albanian journalists from different media outlets on Gender-Sensitive Indicators for Media (GSIM) in Venice, Italy, from 30 to 31 May 2013.
As a follow-up to the training, the Albanian Union of Journalist will organize a meeting, where the participants will share their knowledge with other journalists as well as discuss the preliminary Action Plan on how to integrate more gender equality issues within their daily work. The draft Action Plan was prepared during the training.
In continuing its efforts to support the Albanian Union of Journalists as well as other media organizations to learn more about these indicators, the UN will plan an in-depth training so to ensure the adequate knowledge and to identify a set of indicators relevant to Albania based on the GSIM. The outcomes of this in-depth training will contribute towards the preparation of a revised and relevant set of media indicators.
These proposed indicators will be then be integrated within the Government document on ‘Harmonized Indicators on Gender Equality and Women Status in Albania’ as per the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities order no. 465 of 18 July 2012.
