The Director-General of UNESCO held an extensive discussion with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong on 30 April 2010 during her first official visit to the country.

Irina Bokova expressed her keen interest to expand the cooperation between Singapore and UNESCO in all its fields of competence, particularly in areas in which Singapore has proven itself as an example of excellence, such as education and the sciences. In this regard, the Director-General encouraged Singapore to share its expertise in water management and teacher training with UNESCO offices in the region through secondments from Singaporean government agencies.

As regards culture, Irina Bokova strongly urged Prime Minister Lee to look into ratifying the Organization’s major standard setting instruments in this field, to which Mr Lee said that positive consideration was already being given. Finally, the Director-General suggested the establishment of a Singapore trust fund for the benefit of programme priority activities for the Asia-Pacific region and Africa.
