Preventing Youth Radicalization, with the Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie

The Director-General Irina Bokova met the Honorable Christine St-Pierre, Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie of Quebec on 15 June 2016

As part of her participation in the International Economic Forum of the Americas in Montreal, the Director-General Irina Bokova met the Honorable Christine St-Pierre, Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie of Quebec on 15 June 2016.

Joint action to prevent violent extremism was the core subject of the exchange, notably the conference to be held by Quebec on Internet and Youth Radicalization. on 31 October and 1 November in Quebec city. Christine St-Pierre expressed the strong support of her government to this conference, which will bring together high-level experts in order to identify best practices and propose projects and programs for preventing the radicalization of young people, noting that the government of Québec has developed an action plan to prevent and detect radicalization factors. During the meeting, the Director-General took note of a study produced by the Council on the Status of Women about women's issue and the fight against radicalization. 

The Director General thanked the Minister for the support of Quebec and highlighted the importance of the October Conference building on the first event on this theme held at UNESCO Headquarters in June 2015. She mentioned the role played by UNESCO in the prevention of violent extremism through education, the development of skills and strengthening citizen engagement. Expressing her interest in the study of women and radicalization, she mentioned the round table organized at UNESCO on occasion of International Women's Day on the theme of women as victims, accomplices and change-agents in relation to violent extremism. This round table highlighted the special role of education in prevention and awareness raising. 

The meeting took place in the presence of H.E. the Ambassador of Canada to UNESCO, Mrs Elaine Ayotte, and the Representative of Quebec to UNESCO, Mrs. Line Beauchamp.
