Promoting Disability Rights through the Indonesian Network of Mayors for Inclusive Cities

The officials from eight Indonesian city governments, the representatives of the Ministry of Social Affairs and national NGOs came together in Jakarta on 30 March 2017 to discuss strategies to reinforce and expand the Network of Mayors for Inclusive Cities.

UNESCO Jakarta Office facilitated the consultation with the members of the Indonesian Network of Mayors for Inclusive Cities, in partnership with Association of Indonesian Municipalities (APEKSI), with an aim to:

  • assess the feasibility of establishing Working Group for Inclusive Cities (WGIC) as a part of APEKSI program, and as a way to sustain, strengthen, and expand the Network;
  • adopt the terms of reference and rules of procedures of the WGIC;
  •  discuss the design of the website for the Network of Mayors for Inclusive Cities; and
  • agree on the Charter of Network for Inclusive Cities for subsequent signature by the Mayors.

The consultation was held in the framework of a project on “Promoting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Indonesia”, currently implementing by UNESCO Jakarta Office in partnership with ILO and WHO. The project supports the Indonesian government in the fulfillment of the rights of people with disabilities through promoting the enactment and the implementation of inclusive policies at national and local levels.
The Network of Mayors for Inclusive Cities was established as a partnership of municipalities committed to the full realization of the rights of persons with disabilities. Current member of the network include Padang, Ambon, Banda Aceh, Banjarmasin, Denpasar, Metro, Mojokerto, and Ambon. The proposed partnership with APEKSI, which has close to 100 members, presents the opportunity to raise awareness about the network among other cities in Indonesia, with a view toward the eventual membership.
