Promoting media and information literacy in Brazil
UNESCO’s Brasilia Office established a partnership with the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM) to publish a Portuguese version of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers. As a pilot phase of the Initial Teachers Training (ITT) initiative, 1,000 copies of the Portuguese version will be printed and distributed within UFTM as well as to the general public.
In the framework of the Support Programme for Plans of Restructuring and Expanding Federal Universities, UFTM launched in 2005 its expansion plan, which led to the establishment of teacher education courses. The University currently offers such courses in biology, physics, geography, history, literature, mathematics and chemistry.
“Our expanding plan encourages the development of new approaches to pedagogy and classroom work, so UNESCO’s proposal is particularly useful for us,” says Dr Alexandra Bujokas de Siqueira, lecturer in charge of the partnership. “Empowering new generations of teachers with media and digital culture is a key issue for us,” she adds.
Beyond the ITT curriculum, the University offers a distance learning Master’s programme in mathematics and is also accredited by the Brazilian Open University system. In 2009 UFTM created the Centre for Distance Learning and Education (CEAD), which will support all initiatives related to media and education. This year CEAD has inaugurated a media Education Lab funded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology. In the near future, the University will offer a Master on Education, and media and information literacy will be a core subject for this programme.
