Regional Workshop on "Strengthening capacity to plan and monitor SDG 4: Education 2030" for Arab States held in Muscat

Within the framework of the SDG4 Education 2030, the Oman National Commission for UNESCO, the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, in cooperation with UNESCO Office for the GCC and Yemen, UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in the Arab States, UNESCO Institute for Statistics and the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States organized a Regional Workshop on SDG4 Indicators: Strengthening capacity to plan and monitor SDG 4 Education 2030 in the Gulf States (GCC) and the Arab States,” on 18-20 December 2017 in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

With the participation of Gulf and Arab countries including Oman, Qatar, Morocco, Libya, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt, the workshop was opened under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Saeed Bin Hamad Al Rubaie, Secretary General of the Education Council in the presence of a number of Excellencies and representatives of the Ministries concerned with education in the Sultanate of Oman; officials and representatives of United Nations organizations in the Sultanate; and participants from Arab countries including participants from the Oman. 

The overall purpose of the workshop was: (1) review of the proposed Thematic Indicators and monitoring mechanisms for Education in the Gulf States; and (2) to provide training to initiate preparatory work to adapt the proposed Thematic Indicators for Education for national level definition within national and sub-national contexts and make relevant recommendations for specific national adaptation noting national priorities, resources and capacity constraints. Specifically, the workshop aimed to achieve the following objectives:

1.     Present and discuss national experiences, current initiatives and  challenges facing the region regarding the collection of data and measuring SDG4 indicators

2.     Training on data requirements and methods of calculating and interpretation   thematic indicators that are considered ready for monitoring for 2017 and levels of disaggregation.

3.     Determine the parties responsible for providing each indicator (sources), and determine the components of analysis of the indicators (gender - conservation - age .) and their access in the countries of the region.

4.     Identification of  indicators that help achieve goal 4.7 of SDG4 goals.
