On 3 June 2016, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and Mr. Salih Alkholaifi, Director-General of the Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud Foundation signed a Letter of Intent through which the Foundation confirms its intention to pursue cooperation with UNESCO to strengthen and promote the use of Arabic language‎ in the amount of one million Dollars.

The partnership between UNESCO and the Foundation  will be formalized through the conclusion of a  partnership agreement between UNESCO and the Foundation in November 2016.

The contribution comes as a follow-up to the announcement made by HRH Prince Khalid bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud Foundation, on the occasion of the World Arabic Language Day held at UNESCO Headquarters on 18 December 2015 to grant an amount of five million Dollars for the improvement of the presence of the Arabic language in UNESCO thereby contributing to a bettter understanding of the contribution of Arab language and culture to the world, and to the promotion of linguistic diversity and intercultural dialogue.

This initiative  builds on the cooperation pursued under the “Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud’s contribution to the improvement of the presence of the Arabic language in UNESCO” for which 3 million Dollars were already provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Expressing gratitude to the Foundation for this new contribution, the Director-General thanked Saudi Arabia for its critical support and generous contribution to UNESCO at the present juncture, in order  for the Organization to maintain its leadership in the promotion of multilingualism within the Organization and across its decentralized Offices, including in the field of translation and interpretation.

Mr. Salih Alkholaifi underlined the Foundation’s appreciation of UNESCO’s work to promote intercultural understanding and exchanges, and commended UNESCO’s endeavors and commitments in all its fields of work.
