Strengthening cooperation with Kazakhstan
On Monday, 19 September 2011, on the margins of the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova held a bilateral meeting with Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Yerzhan Kazykhanov.
The strong cooperation between UNESCO and Kazakhstan in the Organization’s fields of expertise was the main topic of discussions. The Minister expressed his commitment to further strengthen the support of his country to the Organization through the Kazakhstan's National Commission for UNESCO.
The Director-General highlighted Kazakhstan's initiative which led the UN General Assembly to proclaim 2010 as the international year for the rapprochement of cultures. She briefed Mr Kazykhanov on the 1000 events held under the celebrations of the year, as well as the outcome of the High Level Panel for Peace and Dialogue among Cultures that she initiated. Speaking about dialogue among cultures and the importance of managing cultural diversity, Irina Bokova welcomed the leading role Kazakhstan plays in this field.
They agreed to increase collaboration in themes related to teacher training, youth and climate change. Minister Kazykhanov stated that Kazakhstan is looking also into UNESCO's significant contribution in the field of water management.
