Students in Timor-Leste Discuss Access to Information with UNESCO

University for Peace (Universidade da Paz, UNPAZ) in Dili, Timor-Leste

21 July 2018-About 120 students and faculty from the University for Peace (Universidade da Paz, UNPAZ) in Dili, Timor-Leste discussed and exchanged views on access to information as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially what it means for common people in the country.

Dr. Ming-Kuok LIM, the Advisor for Communications and Information of UNESCO Jakarta was on hand to interact with the students. Ms. Adelina Adelina Carly Tilman Lourdes, Head of Office for the UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) in Timor-Leste was also present to provide the views about SDG from the UNRC Office. Mr. Apolinario Marcal Maia do Rego who is the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs introduced and welcomed Dr. Lim for the special lecture.

The students and faculty members had a lively exchange with Dr. Lim on what access to information means to Timor-Leste. Dr. Lim stressed that access to information is vital for sustainable development especially as a check and balance against corruption, encourages accountability and empowers peoples’ participation in public discourse.

Together, the students and Dr. Lim had an interactive discussion on the purpose and functions of access to information as a fundamental human rights issue and how it can be applied in real life situations. The importance of developing human resource as the most important resource of the country was also reiterated during the two-hour lecture.

UNESCO is the Custodian Agency for the monitoring and reporting on the progress of the Indicator 16.10.2 of the SDG on ensuring public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements.
