The Director-General discusses dialogue and peace building with Professor Elie Wiesel at the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity

During her meeting with Professor Elie Wiesel in New York on 1st May, 2012, the Director-General, Ms. Irina Bokova, recalled UNESCO's central role as a platform for advancing intellectual and prospective debate on dialogue and peace.

Professor Wiesel acknowledged UNESCO's role in this context and recalled the contribution of the Universal Academy of Cultures to the Organization in the past years. He emphasized the key role of education to advancing global priorities, such as fostering mutual understanding and building more just and inclusive societies.

Discussing the current financial challenges faced by the Organization, Professor Elie Wiesel stressed that "culture and education must be disassociated from politics." "UNESCO must continue its mission", said Professor Wiesel.
