The Director-General Meets with High Level Officials in Sweden

On Tuesday 3 September, following her participation in the High Level Panel at the Opening Plenary Session of the World Water Week, held on Monday 2 September, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, held a series of bilateral meetings with a number of high level officials and government agencies in Sweden - including Ms. Birgitta Ohlsson, Minister for EU-affairs and Democracy, Ms. Maria Arnholm, Minister for Gender Equality, Deputy Minister for Education and Leader of the Swedish delegation to the 37th UNESCO General Conference, Mr. Joakim Stymne, State Secretary for Culture and Sport and Ms. Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, Director General for the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida.

On the same day, the Director-General also had a working lunch with Ms. Lisa Svensson, Swedish Ambassador for Oceans, Seas and Fresh Water met with pupils at Red Cross Folkhögskola.

Themes discussed during these meetings included: freedom of expression and press freedom, gender equality, sexual education, the role of culture in the work for democracy and freedom of expression, UNESCO cultural conventions, the challenges of sustainable oceans and seas, Education for Sustainable Development, the reform process of UNESCO and the global challenges of the Organization.
