Third Congress of the European Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations
The Third General Assembly (Congress) of the European Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations was held in Bucharest, Romania, from 28 November to 2 December 2012. As an inaugural event to the Assembly, a solemn ceremony “Life dedicated to UNESCO,” took place in the Parliament of Romania unique in the world to have a Joint Standing Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for the relations with UNESCO. The ceremony was opened by Ms. Christiane Cosmatu, Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Mr. Andrei Chevelev, Representative of UNESCO.
Participants to the General Assembly included Presidents and Secretaries-General of national federations from 22 countries in Europe and North America. Mr George Christophides, President of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations (WFUCA) also attended the meeting. In addition, the General Assembly approved the nominations of the United States and Portugal as new members of the European Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations.
Three workshops were organized within the framework of the General Assembly on the contribution of civil society to the development of European cultural diversity and multiculturalism; the prospects of cooperation between the young ethnic minorities and majorities; and lastly, the role and perspectives of the European Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations in the Global Ethics programme launched by WFUCA.
As outcomes of the General Assembly, Daniela Popescu was elected President of the European Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations. Ms Marialuisa Stringa (Italy) and Mr Andre Zweyacker (France) were elected Honorary Presidents while Ms Marina Christophides (Cyprus) and Ms Yulia Averina (Russia) were elected respectively Secretary and Treasurer of the Federation.
