Training Workshop for UNESCO ASPnet Schools of Uzbekistan

On 29-31 July 2013, the National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for UNESCO organized Training Workshop for UNESCO ASPnet Schools of Uzbekistan on Education for Sustainable Development. The workshop took place with financial support of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO within the framework of ICON Programme. National partners were the Ministry of Public Education, Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education, Centre for Secondary Specialized, Vocational Education, Avloniy In-Service Teacher Training Central Institute and Republican Education Center.

The workshop is dedicated to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). Education for Sustainable Development foresees including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning process; for example, climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, preservation of water resources and waste management.

Therefore, within the framework of the joint project, specialists of the Republication Educational Centre, National University of Uzbekistan and Tashkent State Pedagogical University developed innovative training manual for teachers on ESD encompassing issues crucial to ensuring sustainable development in Uzbekistan.

At present time 46 educational establishments of Uzbekistan, including 41 general secondary educational schools, 5 academic lyceums and professional colleges, are members of UNESCO ASPnet. Capacity-building of teachers of these ASPnet schools on Education for Sustainable Development was a main goal of the workshop. The objectives of the workshop included:

  • Introduction of new approaches and methodologies in ESD;
  • Presentation of new innovative training manual for teachers and discussion of content of the manual;
  • Discussion of challenges and prospects of introduction of ESD into national curricula;
  • Development of cooperation and networking among ASPnet schools;
  • Sharing best practices among ASPnet schools.

Assistant Secretary-General of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO Mr. Hyun Mook Lim, and 55 national specialists and teachers participated at the workshop.

As a follow-up activity of the capacity-building training workshop, teachers from UNESCO ASPnet schools will be integrating ESD components into curricula at their respective educational establishments.
