UNESCO Director-General denounces killing of Mexican reporter Nolberto Herrera Rodríguez

Paris, 1 August - UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova today condemned the killing of Mexican reporter Nolberto Herrera Rodriguez, whose body was found on 29 July at his home in the town of Guadalupe, in Mexico’s Zacatecas province.

“The heinous crime that took the life of Nolberto Herrera Rodríguez deprives the citizens  of Zacatecas of a professional voice whose duty was to keep them informed,” said Irina Bokova. "I call on the Mexican authorities to fully investigate this murder and bring those responsible to justice,” she added.

Nolberto Herrera Rodríguez worked as a cameraman, editor and reporter for Channel 9 television and other media. According to Reporters Without Borders, his body, bearing multiple stab wounds,  was discovered by his family.

The Directror-General's statements on the killing of media professionals are in line with Resolution 29, adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference in 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” The Director-General’s statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
