UNESCO Kabul Celebrates International Literacy Day

UNESCO has been celebrating International Literacy Day for more than 4 decades to remind the international community that literacy is a basic human right and the foundation of lifelong learning. On 8th September 2013, UNESCO celebrates this year's International Literacy Day with the theme "Literacies for the 21st Century" to highlight the need to realize "basic literacy skills for all" as well as equip everyone with more advanced literacy skills as part of lifelong learning. UNESCO has been playing a key role in eradicating illiteracy through "Enhancement of Literacy in Afghanistan" and "Literacy Empowering for Afghan Police" projects.

To celebrate International Literacy Day, UNESCO Kabul facilitated the participation of His Excellency, the Minister of Education of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, H.E. Farooq Wardak,  in the “International Conference on Alliance for Literacy, Peace and Development in South Asia” in New Delhi India from 7-8 September 2013. The two day event featured the President of India as the Chief Guest, and served to further strengthen and broaden bilateral and multilateral partnerships to promote, support and accelerate the literacy movement in the region. H.E. Minister Wardak took the opportunity to reaffirm Afghanistan’s commitment to literacy programming stating, “Literacy is a prerequisite for a dignified and peaceful way of living.” H.E. Wardak further characterized literacy education and education in general, as a long term and strategic foundation for a peaceful and prospering Afghanistan. 

Through fostering participation in initiatives like the International Literacy Day Celebration in New Delhi, UNESCO Kabul, strives to bring regional educational leaders together in the hopes of promoting shared discourse, regional cooperation and the sharing of best practices especially related to literacy. With International Literacy Day as a beacon of motivation, UNESCO Kabul looks forward to another year of fruitful cooperation with the Ministry of Education that increases access to literacy services throughout the country.
