UNESCO organizes workshop on “Role of Museums: Policies and Practice” in Kuwait

As part of the training programme developed for the project “Preservation and Promotion of Kuwait’s Cultural Heritage”, UNESCO Office for the GCC and Yemen organized a workshop “Role of Museums: Policies and Practice”. The workshop was held in collaboration with the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL), Supreme Council for Planning and Delivery (SCPD) and UNDP in Kuwait, from 8-9 May 2018 at the National Library of Kuwait.

UNESCO opened the workshop in the presence of Dr. Tahany al Adwany, Assistant Secretary General for the NCCAL, Ms. Haifa al Mudthaf, Acting Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General of the SCPD, and Mr. Tarek el Sheikh, Resident Coordinator and head of UNDP who gave opening remarks. The workshop was attended by participants from several museums in Kuwait, both public and private, representatives of the NCCAL, Dar al Athar al Islamiyyah, universities in Kuwait, as well as other governmental organizations whose responsibilities lie within the heritage management and cultural policy domain.

The two-day workshop covered many aspects ranging from the importance of museums and the National Museums in particular for Kuwaiti society, relevance of the UNESCO recommendation concerning the Protection and Promotion of Museums, their Collections, their Diversity and their Role in Society (adopted in 2015), familiarizing participants with the relevant policies and legislation, to introducing them to best practices regarding the development of national museums in the GCC region. Sheikh Khalifa Ahmed AlKhalifa, Director of Bahrain National Museum and Ms Moza al Wardi, Head of Curatorial Department at Oman National Museum shared experiences, goals and challenges from their respectable museums.

Following the workshop, UNESCO will collaborate with the Kuwait National Museum to celebrate International Museum Day on 12 May 2018. In partnership with the NCCAL and National Museum, SCPD, and UNDP, a special exhibition titled “Transportation: a Vehicle of Culture” will be open at the Kuwait National Museum. The exhibition presents objects from various museums in Kuwait, and will be open to visitors until 26 May.
