UNESCO Supports Discussion of Establishment of Belarusian-Russian Transboundary Ecological Corridors

September 29-30, 2005, a Belarusian-Russian meeting to discus the concept of establishment of the Belarusian-Russian transboundary ecological corridors was held in Minsk, Belarus.

The meeting, aimed at contribution to the sustainable development of the region, was organized with the support from the UNESCO Participation Program and the UNESCO Moscow Office.

Belarusian and Russian experts, representatives of national ministries, other governmental bodies of Belarus and Russia and international organizations took part in the event. The participants of the meeting discussed the current situation as well as the problems related to the creation of trans-boundary elements and regional blocks of the international ecological network of Belarus, Russia, and neighboring countries aimed at the preservation of biological and landscape diversity and promotion of sustainable regional development. Special attention was given to the results of the UNESCO project “Concept and scheme of the establishment of the Belarusian-Russian trans-boundary ecological corridors within the framework of the creation of the regional ecological net-work in Polesie” (UNESCO Participation Program 2004-2005).

The meeting resulted in the elaboration of the Final document that includes recommendations concerning the steps, aimed at the practical development of the system of ecological corridors in the Belarusian-Russian transboundary areas and its further integration into the Pan European ecological network, that need to be taken by both countries.

Russian participants visited the Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve. The employees of the BR demonstrated their positive experience and main achievements, organized a trip over the territory of the core, buffer and transit zones. The participants and the employees discussed the nature conservation activities of the BR.
