UNRWA Photo and Film Archives on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register
The photo and film archive of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East UNRWA is the first Palestinian entry to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register of documentary heritage of exceptional value. During its 60 years of work, UNRWA has been documenting all stages of the history and lives of the Palestinian refugees in photographs and films.
The Memory of the World certificate was handed over to the UNRWA Commissioner-General Karen Koning Abu Zayd by the UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova on the occasion of cultural evening for the Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People held in November 2009 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
A total of 35 items of documentary heritage of exceptional value was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2009 based on the recommendation of experts of the International Advisory Committee.
UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme promotes the preservation of the valuable archive holdings and library collections all over the world ensuring their wide dissemination.UNESCO Ramallah office and communication and information sector has been developing a strategy and action plan for promoting and safeguarding Palestinian audiovisual heritage.
The activities have included feasibility studies, mapping and expert missions that will be followed by building the capacities and networks of local expertise, safeguarding measures through restoration and digitalization of archives and establishing a Palestinian National Memory of the World Committee.
