User Committee for flooding alert system in Veneto and Albania to be set up in Venice
The European project FLOODIS aims at developing an early alert system for flooding in demonstration territories namely the Bacchiglione River in Veneto, a torrential type of river with a record of serious floods, which crosses the populated cities of Vicenza (116,000 inhabitants) and Padua (213,000 inhabitants), as well as the Lake of Shkodra in Albania which also records critical and lately more frequent floods with substantial and large scale damages.
The first technical workshop of the project, scheduled from 25-26 November in Venice, Italy, is organized by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy), with the aim to identify the user requirements from the chosen areas.
The EU project “Integrating GMES Emergency Services with satellite navigation and communication for establishing a flood information service" (FLOODIS), officially started on 15 October 2013, is being carried out by a consortium of European companies which collaborate with the UNESCO Venice Office: Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB, Turin, Italy, project coordinator), GeoVille (Austria), Alpha Consult (Italy), NDConsult (UK), Terranea (Germany) and EOXplore (Germany).
The UNESCO Venice Office, in particular, will carry out the working package (WP2) designed to increase inclusiveness and inflow-outflow communication on capacity and knowledge sharing between consortium partners and end users in order to allow their full inclusiveness at the test stage of the pre-operational phase until the service demonstration phase.
This first workshop will put around the table representatives of civil Emergency Directorate of Albania with the Civil protection department of the region of Veneto, along with the representatives of the National Research Council - Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (CNR-IRPI), the Alto Adriatic Water Authority (AAWA), the Albanian National Commission for UNESCO, and the CIMA Foundation in Albania.
This will be done with the multiple goal of setting up the User Committee of the project, sharing a better understanding of the hazards related to chosen testing areas and a better specification of the user requirements through the conception of a dedicated questionnaire. The end users have the specific goal to analyze service requirements and provide recommendations for the FLOODIS Service Platform to be established.
