Webinar for Africa and Arab States regions on cooperation with Associations and Clubs for UNESCO

Held on 8 June 2021, to share experiences and look into ways of enhancing cooperation at regional and interregional level

33 National Commissions (with Associations and Clubs in their MSs) and 9 Field Offices were invited to this regional follow-up of the Online Meeting organized by the Secretariat on 6 April 2021.

Ms Assel Utegenova, Deputy Coordinator of the National Commissions Unit, briefly presented main topics of discussion, i.e. legal framework, use of UNESCO logo and exchange of ideas for potential regional and interregional activities.

National Commissions of Algeria and Kenya presented their countries experiences, providing an excellent starting point for discussion with the involvement of National Commissions, members of Clubs, representatives of the UNESCO Secretariat and Field Network.

Concrete suggestions for further strengthening coordination and collaboration with Associations and Clubs were also provided by the Lebanese National Commission as well as the members of Clubs themselves from Oman and South Sudan. Club of South Sudan, in particular, expressed the need of increased support and cooperation from UNESCO and other MSs to extend capacity and outreach to better achieve its mission.

In his closing remarks Mr Dov Lynch, Chief of the Relations with Member States Section, thanked National Commissions and Clubs for providing insight into the scale of activities undertaken by and with participation of Clubs. He highlighted that the Secretariat recognizes the importance of Clubs' contribution to advancing UNESCO's mandate on the ground making it "resonate in the hearts and minds of normal citizens". Increasing attention is being paid to improving outreach, visibility, support and capacities of this movement in close coordination with all stakeholders, towards catalyzing greater regional and interregional cooperation of Associations and Clubs.
