20 May - Volga Day
The Volga Day will be officially launched on 20 May 2008 in Nizhniy Novgorod in the framework of the 10th International Industrial Forum “Great Rivers” within the initiative of the UNESCO Moscow Office and Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia under the Living Volga overarching programme framework.
The UNESCO Moscow Office and Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia propose to inscribe the annual Volga Day in the international ecological calendar with the purpose to raise the public awareness on the problems of conservation Volga River nature and sustainable use of its resources. The Volga Day is to be a regional festival honoring the Volga River and its vital role in providing water, food, power, recreation and livelihood, commemorating the need of its conservation and sustainable use, as well as the importance of joint action of different stakeholders in addressing these challenges.
The Volga Day events on 20 May 2008 in Nizhny Novgorod will include:
- ceremony of official launching the Volga Day;
- clean-up operations;
- presentation of ecological cultural traditions of Volga peoples (“Semisvet” concert);
- round-table «Building Partnership for Volga River Basin Sustainable Development»;
- exhibitions “The red book of the Nizhegorodskaya oblast” and “The amphibians and reptiles of the Volga river basin”.
The Volga Day is initiated by the UNESCO and Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia partnership programme "Living Volga". The activities to foster better awareness and valuation of biodiversity resources of Volga water and wetlands ecosystems and an understanding of the principles of sustainable development amongst local authorities and communities are an integral part of the programme.
The UNESCO Moscow Office and Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia hope that Volga Day will become a national holiday for Russians in the future.
