Logo of the Volga Day

For the fifth time the population of the Volga Basin will celebrate the Volga Day. Seminars, youth meetings, concerts and environmental games will be organized on 17-20 May 2012 in the framework of the joint UNESCO/Coca-Cola Hellenic in Russia programme “the Living Volga”.

The Volga Day was celebrated for the first time in 2008 in Nizhny Novgorod. The official celebration took place at the International Forum “the Great Rivers” and Nizhny Novgorod Fair (Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka). Afterwards the celebration of the Volga Day was permanently included into the programme of the Forum. This year within the Volga Day a workshop “Ensuring sustainable development of the Volga river basin: inputs of biosphere reserves and local population” will be organized on 17-18 May 2012 by the UNESCO Moscow Office, Coca-Cola Hellenic in Russia, NNGASU and UNESCO Chair at NNGASU.

In Astrakhan a Green Lounge will be opened on 18 May. This will be a discussion platform for youth active in nature conservation, environmental awareness raising and promotion of sustainable development. It will allow young people to tell about their projects, get acquainted with the fellow activists and learn from the comments of experts and representatives of local authorities. The Green Lounge will be held in the Ministry of Education of the Astrakhan Region with the organizational and information support of the Astrakhan Regional NGO “Assistance for Environmental Conservation” and UNDP/GEF project “Conservation of Wetland Biodiversity in the Lower Volga Region”.

The festivities for the local population will take place on 19-20 May in various nature reserves of the Volga Basin, which received the status of “biosphere reserves” within the UNESCO “Man and the Biosphere” programme. Great Volzhsko-Kamsky biosphere reserve, Middle Volga Integrated biosphere reserve, which consists of Zhigulevsky Nature Reserve and National Park “Samarskaya Luka”, and Darvinsky biosphere reserve will hold clean-up operations of the riverbanks, environmental games, photo contests, excursions and concerts.

All these activities are grouped together by the partnership programme between UNESCO and Coca-Cola Hellenic in Russia “the Living Volga”. The programme works to coordinate and strengthen activities on river and biodiversity protection and conservation, as well as enhance public involvement.

For the past 5 years the Volga Day gained its supporters, who at the own initiative organize celebrations in their towns. Besides Astrakhan, Nizhny Novgorod and Great Volzhsko-Kamsky, Middle Volga Integrated and Darvinsky biosphere reserves, the Volga Day will be honored in Volgograd, Saratov and Yaroslavl.

The UNESCO Moscow Office congratulates everyone with the Volga Day and calls to contribute to the preservation of the Great Russian River – Volga!
