“HIV and AIDS in the Mirror of the Media”
On 26 November 2010, in anticipation of the World AIDS Day, the round table “HIV and AIDS in the Mirror of the Media”, bringing together experts, journalists, media professionals, and educators, was organized in Moscow, at the Central House of Journalists.
The round table, summing up the outcomes of a year-long project aimed to strengthen capacity of journalists reporting on HIV and AIDS in the regions of Russia, focused on the capacities of school and student media as tools for HIV and AIDS/IDU prevention among the youth. Journalists and editors of school media explored opportunities for new partnerships – of the regional media and school media. Editors and journalists of the school media represented Moscow, Tver, Tula and Ryazan regions.
During the course of the project implemented by the UNESCO Moscow Office together with the Russian Union of Journalists in 2010 more than 100 media professionals were trained. CD containing a handbook for journalists reporting on HIV and AIDS related issues was distributed among the journalists of 5 regions of Russia.
Participants of the round table reiterated the importance of cooperation of expert and media communities and expressed hope that further active involvement of school and student media would lead to better awareness and more responsible attitude towards health among the youth.
