Seminar on "Involvement Of Governmental, Private and Public Organizations in Solving Problems on Conservation of the Lower Volga Wetlands"

In the framework of the UNESCO Moscow Office partnership with Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia for “Living Volga” the seminar and round-table on “Involvement of governmental, private and public organizations in solving problems on conservation of the Lower Volga wetlands” was held in close cooperation with the Ecocenter “Zapovedniks” and the Astrakhansky state biosphere reserve in Astrakhan region, Russia, on 25-29 September 2007.

In the framework of the UNESCO Moscow Office partnership with Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia for “Living Volga” the seminar and round-table on “Involvement of governmental, private and public organizations in solving problems on conservation of the Lower Volga wetlands” was held in close cooperation with the Ecocenter “Zapovedniks” and the Astrakhansky state biosphere reserve in Astrakhan region, Russia, on 25-29 September 2007.

The seminar and round-table consisted of two parts:
- Plenary session of the round-table for the representatives of governmental, private and public organizations of Astrakhan region and Republic Kalmykia, which was held in Astrakhan in the building of Administration of the Astrakhansky state biosphere reserve;
- Training-seminar for the working group of representatives of governmental, private and public organizations of Astrakhan region and Republic Kalmykia on development of plan of the primary joint actions on conservation of the Lower Volga wetlands, which  took place in the information center of the Damchik site of the Astrakhan state biosphere reserve.

More than 30 participants took part in the Seminar, representing governmental, private and public organizations of Astrakhan region and Republic Kalmykia. The Seminar was the first and unique experience in the region of gathering all together the representatives of such different stakeholder groups as governmental, private and public organizations to elaborate a mechanism o joint action and coordination of activities on conservation of the Lower Volga wetlands.

At the Plenary session of the round-table for the representatives of governmental, private and public organizations of Astrakhan region and Republic Kalmykia, which was held in Astrakhan in the building of Administration of the Astrakhansky state biosphere reserve on 26 September 2007, reports on a great value of the Lower Volga wetlands and problems of conservation of these unique natural complexes were presented. Different aspects of the Lower Volga ecological problems, as well as the ways of addressing these problems from the points of view of each of the participating organizations were presented. The perspectives for development of cooperation between different stakeholders for the Lower Volga wetlands conservation were discussed.

The prepared and published by the UNESCO Moscow Office promotional and methodological materials on the Lower Volga wetlands (“Let’s save the Lower Volga wetlands together!”, “Strategy and programmes for raising public awareness on a great value of the Lower Volga wetlands”, plans of actions for raising public awareness on a great value of the Lower Volga wetlands) were presented and disseminated among the seminar participants.

The second part of the Seminar was conducted in a form of training as the most efficient way of work. Training-seminar for the working group of representatives of governmental, private and public organizations of Astrakhan region and Republic Kalmykia on development of plan of the primary joint actions on conservation of the Lower Volga wetlands took place in the information center of the Damchik site of the Astrakhan state biosphere reserve.

In the framework of the Seminar-training the lection-presentation on a great value of the Lower Volga wetlands was conducted, after which a field trip in a form of a boat trip to the Volga Delta was organized for the seminar participants.

The participants of the seminar-training formed a working group, consisting of representatives of governmental organizations, business, specially protected natural territories, educational institutions, public and international organizations.

The results of the Seminar-training are the following:
- Representatives of different stakeholder groups realized the additional values and advantages of working together;
- the working group of representatives of governmental, private and public organizations established;
- fields of possible cooperation identified;
- plan of joint activities on the conservation of the Lower Volga wetlands elaborated;
- coordination mechanism adopted;
- decision on the adoption of resolution of the Seminar-training and its dissemination among different organizations able to impact on the sustainable development and ecological status of the Lower Volga wetlands taken.

Media coverage of the event was provided by the regional TV channel “Our time” and the newspaper “Citizen”.
