The Second International Seminar on Museum Security and Methods of the 1970 UNESCO Convention Implementation
The Second International Seminar on “Museum Security and Methods of the 1970 UNESCO Convention Implementation” was carried out on June 4th-5th, 2011, in Moscow. The Seminar was the continuation of the International seminar on actual aspects of security ensuring of Russian Federation museum fund, held in Saint-Petersburg, 1 – 3 December 2010 and was organized in the framework of the joint project of UNESCO and IFESCCO “Running a Museum – XXI Century: Thematic Regional Capacity-building UNESCO/ICOM Trainings and Expert Meetings for CIS countries” (2011-2014).
The Seminar was hold by ICOM Russia jointly with the Ministry of Culture, State Hermitage, State historical museum and State Central museum of musical culture named after M. Glinka with the support of the UNESCO Moscow office for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Republic of Moldova, and the Russian Federation, and the Intergovernmental Foundation for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation (IFESCCO). The seminar was carried out during the international museum festival “Intermuseum – 2011” hold on 3rd- 7th of June, which was one of the main peculiarities and obvious advantages of this event.
Seminar was hold in form of theoretic speeches, divided in two sections in concordance with lines of Seminar work and after all discussions there were practical speeches with demonstrations. On second day of the Seminar learning visits to main Moscow museums were organized.
More than 80 museum specialists from CIS countries and representatives of ICOM, UNESCO, Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and Defense ministry attended the seminar. While the project realization leading companies, which work with museum security systems were involved to demonstrate existent technologies. In the biggest museums of Moscow practical trainings on museum security systems work were realized.
The following issues were in agenda of seminar:
• UNESCO convention 1970 and the innovational marking technologies of cultural values as a measure of the convention realization;
• Modern practice of preservation of cultural heritage. International experience;
• Experience of usage of new fire-extinguishing systems in museums.
One of main qualities of the Seminar was the combination of theoretic speeches, devoted to issues of the museum security sphere management, practical lectures, which described existent technologies, and equipment demonstration.
All this was possible thanks to not only museum workers but also specialists from different organizations, which assist museum development, involvement into the Seminar and also due to Seminar conduction on a basis of the Festival and exhibition of the museum equipment and technologies “Techmuseum”.
