UNESCO Fosters Women's Political Participation in the Caucasus

On 10-11 November 2008 in Derbent, the Republic of Dagestan, Russian Federation, a Subregional Conference on “Women's political participation in the Caucasus” was held. The event brought together experts in gender issues from the Caucasian countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Southern Federal District of Russia, representatives of the academic community, ombudsmen institutes, governmental institutions, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, including organizations-members of the Network of NGOs working with women and children in the Caucasus.

On 10-11 November 2008 in Derbent, the Republic of Dagestan, Russian Federation, a Subregional Conference on “Women's political participation in the Caucasus” was held. The event brought together experts in gender issues from the Caucasian countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Southern Federal District of Russia, representatives of the academic community, ombudsmen institutes, governmental institutions, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, including organizations-members of the Network of NGOs working with women and children in the Caucasus.

All together more then 60 specialists gathered in this ancient Caucasian city with the goal to share their experience and best practices in the field of women’s political participation in their countries and to elaborate detailed recommendations on the content, format and methodology of conducting the research on the above mentioned subject. The research findings shall be published next year in UNESCO Series “MOST Policy Paper”.

During the second day of the conference Vera Zvonareva, the winner of the Olympic Games in Beijing (tennis) took part in the event. Her meeting with Shahabas Shahov, the Dagestan Minister of physical training and Sport of as well as the meeting of Ummupasil Omarova, the Vice Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Dagestan with the heads of the delegations also took place in the framework of the event.
