UNESCO Information and Documentation Center Opened in the Republic of Moldova

The UNESCO Information and Documentation Centre in the premises of the Central Scientific Library “Andrei Lupan” of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova was officially opened on 5 November 2008 in Chisinau by the National Commission of the Republic of Moldova for UNESCO within the celebration of 45 years of the Library. The UNESCO Information and Documentation Centre was established with the assistance and financial support of the UNESCO Moscow Office.

The UNESCO Information and Documentation Centre in the premises of the Central Scientific Library “Andrei Lupan” of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova was officially opened on 5 November 2008 in Chisinau by the National Commission of the Republic of Moldova for UNESCO within the celebration of 45 years of the Library. The UNESCO Information and Documentation Centre was established with the assistance and financial support of the UNESCO Moscow Office.

Mr Artur Cozma, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Moldova and Chairman of the National Commission of the Republic of Moldova for UNESCO, noted that UNESCO puts a greater emphasis on providing universal access to information which could directly contribute to the economic growth.

The UNESCO Information and Documentation Center is aimed to provide information on UNESCO’s activities; collect UNESCO’s publications both in print and electronic format; assure access to UNESCO’s web portal; conduct roundtables and seminars within UNESCO’s field of competence. One of the main goals of the Centre is to preserve the documentary heritage from the holdings of the Central Scientific Library in the framework of the Memory of Moldova project as part of the Memory of the World Programme. The Centre has been provided with the necessary equipment to digitalize the library collection of valuable documents and to create its electronic database.

Within the opening ceremony an exhibition of books, granted by the UNESCO Moscow Office, was held. The event was attended by more than 300 guests, including representatives of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, the Academy of Sciences, NGO’s, the media as well as archive and library specialists from Moldova, Romania and Ukraine.
