UNESCO Office in Moscow celebrates 20 years

In 2014 the UNESCO Cluster Office in Moscow to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation, celebrates 20 years of operation.

The UNESCO Office in Moscow was opened in 1994 to strengthen cooperation with the Russian Federation. In 2002, as a result of decentralization the mandate of the UNESCO Moscow office was expanded technically to full spectrum of UNESCO’s sectoral activities as well as geographically to work with five countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation. It is the Organization’s only cluster office based in Europe and North America.

Today, the creation of conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples within the framework of its four major areas of action – education, science, culture, communication and information – lies at the heart of UNESCO’s mission. These four areas are fundamental for lives and minds of people. Only in close cooperation with the Member-States and multiple partners that UNESCO’s global mission – “Building Peace in the Minds of Men and Women” – can be achieved. The work of the UNESCO Office in Moscow is dedicated to the Organization’s unique competencies in education, science, culture, communication and information are being translated into concrete action at country and regional levels.

Through the 20 years the UNESCO Office in Moscow has implemented various projects in the areas of education, science, culture, communication and information; established a multi-lateral dialogue among the Organization, national authorities, civil society, and the academic community; achieved significant results working within the “Delivering as One” incentive of the United Nations.

The UNESCO Office in Moscow would like to pay a tribute to its committed partners, who willingly share their knowledge, skills and vision for the sake of the common good. The results achieved to date constitute a solid base from which to explore new opportunities and to face new challenges in our joint efforts to create a more democratic, sustainable and human world.
