Volga Day - 2009
On 20 May 2009 in the framework of the “Living Volga” programme initiated by the UNESCO Moscow Office and Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia the cities situated on the Volga River will celebrate the Volga Day.
Volga Day will be celebrated in Astrakhan, Volgograd, Nizhny Novgorod and the Republic of Tatarstan. Additional celebrations will be held in Samara and Yaroslavl. The Volga Days are organized by the UNESCO Moscow Office, Coca-Cola HBC Eurasia, United Nations Development Programme and its UNDP/GEF project “Conservation of Wetland Biodiversity in the Lower Volga Region”, Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka (in the framework of the international scientific and industrial forum “Great Rivers-2009”), Astrakhansky biosphere reserve, Volzhsko-Kamsky biosphere reserve, Volgograd regional NGO “Ecological Centre “Green Orbit” and coordination centre of the public movement for Volga preservation “Let’s Help the River” within the ecological centre “Dront”.
Celebrations will include river banks clean-up operations, presentation of cultural traditions of the region, scientific discussions on the topics of sustainable development, photo and painting exhibitions, concerts and game activities. The Volga Day is held to assist in establishing collaborations, fining solutions for Volga preservation and involvement of different organizations and population groups in these activities. The main purpose is to attract proper attention to the great River Volga. Volga Day is dedicated to live preservation and to promotion of sustainable development.
