Freedom of Expression
Freedom of expression – "pursuit of objective truth" and "the free exchange of ideas and knowledge"
UNESCO promotes freedom of expression and freedom of the press as a basic human right. It also fosters media independence and pluralism as prerequisites and major factors of democratization by providing advisory services on media legislation and sensitizing governments, parliamentarians and other decision-makers.
UNESCO also promotes advisory services on adaptation of media legislation dealing with freedom of expression, freedom of the press, as well as freedom of information and enhances dialogue among media professional about ethics, professional standards and their working conditions.
Anna Politkovskaya, the late Russian journalist, was awarded UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2007.
