Documentary Heritage

Eastern Africa has a rich documentary heritage and UNESCO is working with partner institutions to raise the profile of the Memory of the World Programme in Eastern Africa. This Programme is a unique mechanism to raise awareness about the importance of preservation, dissemination and accessibility to documentary heritage.

In the region, special attention is given in building the capacities of stakeholders to put in place comprehensive preservation policies and strategies to digitize documentary heritage. These activities are carried out in cooperation with national and international partner institutions in promoting synergies with ongoing interventions to preserve and make documentary heritage accessible, but also intangible heritage initiatives in the region for better understanding of cultural and documentary heritage.

Pilot initiatives are also being supported in assisting Member States in the implementation of the Recommendation concerning the Promotion and Use of Multilingualism and Universal Access to Cyberspace. Specific attention is given to youth and its role in making use of local national content.
