Youth Development and Empowerment

In the Youth Development and Empowerment strand of work, UNESCO in Eastern Africa promotes entrepreneurship education among youth by upscaling and sharing on experience on Skills and Technical Education Programme (STEP) in Kenya – work with the East African Community and countries in the region, advocating its adoption as a programme of the community, to address challenges of youth unemployment in the region, in partnership with governments, funding entities, the private sector and the like.

Moreover, the work continues to support youth civic engagement participation in peacebuilding, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security; UNESCO in Eastern Africa is also upscaling Somali Youth Peace Forum initiative, launched in 2016 across the country, and will introduce same in neighboring post countries in both the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes Region; It will promote and support work on youth, intercultural dialogue and peacebuilding; An emphasis is put on preventing Violent Extremism and Radicalization work in Eastern Africa.

Finally, UNESCO in Eastern Africa continues to provide support to member states in the development and/or review of national youth policies, while also strengthening UNESCO youth networks in South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Uganda.
