On Saturday, 24th November, Viet Nam officially celebrated the inclusion of Non Nuoc Cao Bang as the  second UNESCO Global Geopark in Viet Nam. People across the country were able to follow the live television broadcast on state television, marking a national celebration of this new milestone of cooperation between Vietnamese Government, Cao Bang Province and UNESCO.

During his speech, H.E. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, stressed the importance of the UNESCO recognition to the country and the province, noting that the nomination reflected Viet Nam’s strong commitment to promoting models of sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To provide local communities with better economic opportunities, the Prime Minister recommended the development of a tourism development model that enhances, not exploits, local culture. The UNESCO Representative, Michael Croft, emphasized that this was very much the Organization’s preferred approaching, promising that UNESCO “would work closely with authorities to ensure that a community-based approach anchors new development initiatives, especially the engagement of the ethnic minority groups whose rich cultural identities and traditions assure a cultural diversity as rich as the Geoparks own landscape.”
