UNESCO Venice Office mourns passing of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Eyüce, Member of its Scientific Council
Yolanda Valle-Neff, Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy), expresses deep sadness over the news of the death of Prof. Dr. Eyüce, member of the Office’s Scientific Council since 2012, on 9 August 2013.
Prof. Eyüce had earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Department of Architecture in the Faculty of Architecture at Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1973. In the same year, he started working as an assistant at Ege University (E.U.). He earned his Master of Architecture degree in 1976 and Ph.Degree in 1979 at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Ege University. He conducted his research at the TU Karlsruhe Institute Für Industrielle Bauproduktion with a German Academic Exchange Service (D.A.A.D.) research fellowship.
Prof. Eyüce was a founding member of the Department of Architecture at KAAU, Jedda (1981) and Um-al-Kurra University, Mecca (1983). He taught at the Faculty of Architecture at Dokuz Eylül University from 1988 to 1995 and, served as an adviser in Betontaş A.Ş. from 1998 to 1992. In 1995, he taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the Izmir Institute of Technology (IYTE). In the same year, he served as a deputy dean at the Faculty of Architecture. In 1998, Prof. Eyüce was awarded the National Architecture Award for the Project ‘Izmir Aquarium’. Between 1999 and 2004, he was an adviser to the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. In 2004, Prof. Eyüce was transferred to the Faculty of Architecture at Bahçeşehir University and in 2006, he became the Dean.
During his career, Prof. Eyüce participated in numerous conferences and symposia in the U.S.A., Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and many European countries. He carried out many projects and his academic works were published in Turkey and abroad.
Information on Prof. Eyüce’s passing was shared by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. “I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the family of Prof. Eyüce, as well as the country, the Ministry and the Bahçeşehir University for the loss of this outstanding person and professor“, said Yolanda Valle-Neff. “His passing is a great loss to us and to the cultural and academic communities. Prof. Eyüce will be sorely missed in Venice where he was highly appreciated, not only for having enriched our work and for the positive impact he had during his two-year mandate as member of our Scientific Council, but also for his unique human qualities. He will be warmly remembered.”
