UNESCO Secretariat's information

The 5th session of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council will be held on 8 and 9 December 2020. In light of the unprecedented sanitary situation, this session will be organized entirely online.

In consultation with the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council (UGGp C) and the Global Geoparks Network, it was decided to postpone all 2020 evaluation and revalidation mission to next year, which means that this session of the UGGpC will not handle the assessment of the 20 new applicants nor the 29 sites that were expected to be revalidated this year. The Secretariat did receive however the progress reports of the sites that were deferred by the 2018 and 2019 Council sessions and will present them for consideration by the UGGpC in the upcoming council.

The 5th session of the UGGp will also look into items related to governance, such as the revised IUGS assessment methodology, the self-evaluation file (form A) and the checklist and explanatory note. You will see from the attached draft agenda that the session will also start with the election of the Bureau members (Chair, Vice-Chair and Rapporteur).

Permanent Delegations of UNESCO Member States, UNESCO National Commissions and National Committees for UNESCO Global Geoparks that wish to participate as an Observer, are kindly requested to send a written request to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Secretariat.
