This workshop convened by IUCN and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas will introduce the work of the IUCN World Heritage Programme within the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, and in particular the latest global assessment of natural World Heritage Sites – the IUCN World Heritage Outlook – and the results for sites that are overlapping World Heritage and Biosphere Reserves. World Heritage and MAB give complementary means of recognising landscapes internationally, but these complementarities are not always fully realised. Also given that 109 biosphere reserves overlap with 100 of the listed World Heritage Sites there are both important synergies, and also potential conflicts from overlapping status. The workshop will be invited to discuss how to better connect MAB and World Heritage in the listing, monitoring and protection and management.
