Iberoamerican Congress on Biosphere Reserves
All Hands, All Voices”
9–14 November 2010, Puerto Morelos, Mexico
UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is organizing - along with the Ibero MAB Secretariat and the Mexican and Spanish authorities - the first Ibero-American Biosphere Reserves Congress.
It is foreseen that the Ministers of Environment of Mexico and Spain will be present, and it is also envisaged to invite the Princess of Asturias and the President of Mexico, as well as UNESCO’s DG and/or ADG/SC.
The Congress will draw up a statement to be delivered by the Mexican Authorities two weeks later at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) of the UNFCCC, stressing the importance of biosphere reserves as learning laboratories for sustainable development and biodiversity protection, and as study sites to monitor the global impact of climate change and biodiversity loss. Biosphere reserves should also be nominated by countries as research and study sites for future impact mitigation and adaptation.
