Outcomes of the first Ibero-American Biosphere Reserves Congress
This first congress, entitled “Biosphere Reserves: All Hands, All Voices”, was organized in Puerto Morelos, Mexico, by the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) with the Ibero MAB Secretariat and the Mexican and Spanish authorities on 9-14 November 2010.
The Congress drafted a statement that was delivered to the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP16), recognising the importance of biosphere reserves as learning laboratories for sustainable development and biodiversity protection, and as study sites to monitor the global impact of Climate Change and biodiversity loss. The declaration called for the Biosphere Reserves to be incorporated into the financing systems for studies of the effect of the measures for adaptation to, and mitigation of Global Climate Change arising from the COP 16 meeting in Cancun.
This is a way to capitalize on MAB’s 40 years of research, experience and practice to further climate change research, monitoring and mitigation, at a time when the programme is getting ready to celebrate its 40 anniversary in 2011.
