A set of five Science-Policy Briefs (SPI) have been compiled to contribute to a further development of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD, Directive 2000/60). The SPIs review the state-of-the-art and identify research gaps related to drought in the physical system (climate and hydrology), socio-economic and environmental impact assessment, policy-making and integrated water resources management. They help guide appropriate management responses. The SPIs have been compiled through the FP7 project XEROCHORE that was financed by the European Commission, and contribute to the dissemination by the UNESCO EURO-FRIEND project group on Low Flow and Drought. The SPIs help to bridge the gap between science and policy makers and contribute to the realization of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme, Phase VII (IHP-VII). The SPIs are published in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
The Science-Policy Briefs include:
(1) Characterization of water bodies (WFD Article 5) related to drought;
(2) Monitoring of surface water and groundwater status (WFD Article 8) related to drought;
(3) Recovery of costs for water services (WFD Article 9) related to drought;
(4) Implementing a Programme of measure in a context of drought (WFD Article 11) related to drought;
(5) River basin management plans (WFD Article 13) related to drought.
