Meeting of the great rivers of the world - International Summit

Campidoglio, Rome

The Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea, in partnership with UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe), the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO, Secretariat of the Global Alliances for Water and Climate) and Aquamadre, held the International Summit "Water and Climate: Meeting of the Great Rivers of the World" from the 23rd to the 25th of October 2017 in Rome, Italy.

The managers and representatives of the most important river basins of the world, together with UN representatives, coming from all continents, have met to inspire a meaningful dialogue aiming at facing the future of water, threatened by more and more frequent and violent climate change and its dramatic consequences in terms of floods, drought and degradation of ecosystems.

In the working session entitled “Improving knowledge for adaptation to climate change, the creation and the strengthening of monitoring networks and Water Information Systems”, WWAP Coordinator professor Stefan Uhlenbrook gave a keynote presentation on the key challenges related to water monitoring and presented the approach of the SDG6 Synthesis Report (UN-Water Report, currently produced), as a new instrument to provide effective policy recommendations on the accelerating the achievement of SDG6 in the overall Agenda 2030 context.
